The Benefits of Smiling
If you want to change the way you feel to a more positive mood, you might try just smiling.
Smiling actually changes your brain. Just the physical act of smiling releases powerful endorphins into your brain. Endorphins are the chemicals in the brain that make you feel good. They’re the same chemicals that create the “runner’s high” for athletes. You can get the same benefits just from smiling.
Even though it may feel a little strange at first, if you stick with smiling for even a few seconds, you will actually experience your mood changing. I’ve actually made myself laugh out loud by looking in the mirror and putting on a huge grin. As odd as it sounds, this simple exercise of consciously putting a smile on my face triggered something that resulted in me experiencing genuine joy.
At first I felt a little silly, but instead of allowing that negative thought to rob me of the joy I was feeling, I just went with it. I was literally amazed at how just smiling helped me to start feeling better.
Smiling also makes you much more attractive. It’s contagious.
Just try it. If you smile at someone, they will smile back at you 99.9% of the time. It makes both of you feel better.
Research has shown that smiling actually helps your immune system by producing more white blood cells which help to fight disease. So even if you are not feeling well, physically, smiling can help you.
Smiling can even help you to become more successful in life. People are attracted to happy, positive people and are more likely to do business with them. When people see you smiling, it makes them feel better as well.
The trick is to smile when you don’t feel like it. If you do, you’ll soon find your emotions changing and before you know it, the smile on your face comes naturally as a result of feeling happier.
So don’t wait until you feel like smiling. Smile first and let the feelings follow.
